Check These Off Your List (Seriously): 9 Common Business Card Mistakes Not to Make

You know — we love a good checklist! 😍

This, however, is not a “good” checklist. That is, it’s a checklist of all the bad things we really want you NOT to do to your business card.

Inconsistent, confusing design elements

Your card should showcase your business, what you stand for, and why the client should work with you. So, does it? If your card leaves potential customers confused about what they’re holding, it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

Check: Is your design confusing or wildly different from your brand image guidelines?

A bland look

Here’s a great rule when it comes to business cards: the memorable ones get kept and the boring ones get lost or thrown away. If your card is a bit too boring to make an impact, there’s no point in printing it, is there? (Luckily, you can always come up with more business card design ideas.)

Check: Does your card lack color, interesting type, a cool layout, or any other awesome design feature?

A cluttered appearance

On the other side, you also don’t want your card to be cluttered as this will give it a confusing and unprofessional look. Cluttered cards are ineffective, so be sure to only include the necessary information and say yes to white space!

Check: Have you overstuffed your card?

Crazy typography

How your words look is just as important as what they say. The right typography makes a great statement. But if you let it get away from you, it can also be a drawback.

Check: Does your card include more than two different fonts, a small font size, or other similar issues?

Omits essential information/includes unnecessary information

There’s not much space on your business card, but it still needs to include the info your potential client will use to contact you. Your name, company, and contact info are all essential elements. To avoid cluttering your card and keep things professional, you probably don’t want to include more than that.

Check: Is your card missing info, or does it include unnecessary or out-of-date copy?

Typos and misprints

Nothing screams unprofessional like a business card with glaring spelling mistakes. With so little copy to hide behind, any mistakes you make are very noticeable. It’s important to check, double-check, and triple-check your card before printing to ensure your card won’t stand out for the wrong reason.

Check: Does your text look like it was written by a first-grader?

No value proposition

Why should your potential customer choose you? In fact, why should they even remember your name? Hopefully, your business card will tell them. It’s important for your card to clearly feature your services/product, value proposition, and what makes you stand out. This will help your contact know that you’re the best choice for the job.

Check: Is your card unconvincing and unpersuasive?

Cheap finishes and paper

While you may feel that cheaper is better, we guarantee that your contact is thinking quite the opposite. If you want to impress your potential customers, opt for professional finishes and heavy-duty paper. Remember: you don’t have to go overboard, but you should at least try to make your card feel as nice as it looks.

Check: Does your card feel as light and insubstantial as toilet paper? 😁

Creating a one-and-done card

If your business has a website (which it should), did you just create it one day then forget about it? No! Your business card, like your website or like a small child, requires constant monitoring. Take a mental note of how many contacts reach back out to you after receiving your card. If your card doesn’t seem to be making a difference, it’s okay to make changes.

Check: Has your card stayed the same since you first dreamed up the design?

If you’ve answered “yes” to one or more of the items above, don’t worry! It’s not the end of the world.

But it does mean that you should go back to the drawing board and rethink your business card.

Remember, the key to a great business card lies in a great design. (And in including the right info, of course!).

We hope this post has offered you some business card inspiration and helped get your creative juices flowing! There are so many cool business card designs out there to get inspired by. With the help of those examples and our handy checklist, we know you’ll come up with some fabulous designs.

People Also Ask…
1. How do I come up with a business card?

You’ll find plenty of DIY business card templates and business card ideas online. You could throw a rock and hit at least 50 of them (but please, don’t throw rocks at your computer). But if you want a truly professional design, then a professional designer is the way to go.

2. What info should be on my business card?

Your business card should include all the necessary relevant and up-to-date info that a potential client can use to get in touch with you. This includes:

  • Your name and job title
  • Your company name, logo, and tagline
  • Your contact information (telephone number, email address, etc.)
